I am sure you have heard by now that essential oils have really great benefits. You may even have used them in a diffuser to scent the air. But did you know they have great cleaning and disinfecting properties that make them perfect to add to your homemade cleaning products? Just a few drops not only gives a fresh scent, but also those extra germ fighting powers. Through my research, I have found that most essential oils inhibit the growth of bacteria and some others have antifungal and antiviral properties.
One book I rely on as my reference guide to all things essential oils is The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy, by Valerie Ann Worwood. It discusses how to use essential oils for a multitude of purposes. The author does an amazing job of breaking down all the properties which make certain oils great for cleaning. If you are looking for even more information on essential oils, I find THIS app to be especially helpful.
Now, without further ado, I give you my five favorite essential oils for cleaning:
Lemon Essential Oil is popular for using in the kitchen not only for its fresh scent but because it is a natural disinfectant. I love using it to make a kitchen cleaning spray because it is great at cutting through tough grease. This property also makes lemon essential oil good to use in homemade dish soaps and laundry soap.
Lavender Essential Oil is most commonly known as a sleep aide but it is also has antibacterial properties making it great for cleaning as well. It freshens the air by neutralizing odors. The scent of lavender is one of my favorites.
Tea Tree Essential Oil, also known as Melaleuca, is a powerful antiseptic yet nonpoisonous to humans. I find it makes a great homemade shower spray. Because it has anti fungal properties, tea tree oil helps to keep mold and mildew at bay.
Purify Essential Oil Blend (from Rocky Mountain Oils), also known as Purification Essential Oil Blend (from Young Living), is a potent antibacterial blend of a few different oils. These oils are typically a combination of citronella, lemongrass, rosemary, melaleuca (tea tree), lavender, and myrtle essential oil. Because of its antiseptic, antibacterial, anti fungal and sanitizing properties, it works to purify and freshen the air. It also neutralizes odors and repels bugs, insects, and rodents. I add a drop or two of this to every cleaner I make.
Thieves Essential Oil Blend (from Young Living) contains a combination of clove, lemon, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus and rosemary essential oil. This blend is awesome for killing germs and has a great smell. When cleaning toilets, light switches, and other areas of my house that get particularly germy, I have found a spray of thieves cleaner to be effective. Combine it with a microfiber cloth for that extra boost of cleanliness.
