DIY all purpose cleaner which essential oils to useWith natural cleansing and purifying properties, it is easy to see why essential oils would be great to use for natural cleaning. I love diffusing them to naturally scent and purify the air in my home and making homemade cleaners and sprays. Best of all, it is so easy to do. (My favorite reference for the properties of oils is either Modern Essentials Usage Guide from Aroma Tools or The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy by Valerie Ann Woodward. Both great books that I highly recommend for use in your essential oil journey.)

While there are many essential oils that offer antibacterial, antiseptic, antifungal or other properties you would want in a natural cleaner, these are my five favorites.

Lemon Essential Oil is an obvious choice for cleaning as it is the smell nearly everyone associates with cleanliness. I add it to my laundry for a naturally clean scent. Diffuse it with some rosemary and lavender to freshen the home. Lemon essential oil is also a great choice to use when making homemade hand and dish soaps because it is great at cutting through tough grease.

Purify Cleansing Blend is the combination of several essential oils including citrus oils, pine, citronella and melaleuca. It is another one I like to add to the washing machine to freshen particularly stinky laundry, such as towels. I also love adding it along with lemon essential oil it to the diffuser to eradicate unpleasant odors.

Melaleuca (Tea Tree) Essential Oil is a very versatile oil. It can not only cleanse and rejuvenate the skin, but can also protect against environmental and seasonal threats as well. I love adding this one to my all purpose cleaning sprays. Melaleuca essential oil is another one that is great to diffuse as well as it helps to cleanse the air in your home.

OnGuard Protective Blend is the combination of several essential oils including wild orange, clove, cinnamon and eucalyptus. It is one of my favorites for making an effective all purpose surface cleaner. It is also great to diffuse for cleansing the air. Add it to your homemade hand sanitizer as it protects against environmental threats. Read more about it in my article OnGuard for Green Cleaning.

Arborvitae Essential Oil is a new favorite of mine. This oil is a natural wood preservative along with its cleansing properties. Mix with lemon essential oil and a carrier oil for an effective wood polish. Or, diffuse to purify the air.

TIPS:

  • Add lemon essential oil or purify cleansing blend along with vinegar in place of fabric softener to freshen laundry.
  • Use lemon essential oil, melaleuca essential oil, or OnGuard Protective Blend in homemade all-purpose cleaning sprays.
  • When using citrus oils in homemade cleaners always use glass bottles or jars.
  • Lemon essential oil and arborvitae essential oil, along with a carrier oil, make a great furniture polish.
  • Diffuse any of these oils or a combination of them to naturally freshen and cleanse the air in your home.

Other great essential oils to consider using for cleaning are lime, wild orange, eucalyptus, peppermint, and douglas fir. Ready to order your own? Shop my doTERRA site HERE.
