Homemade all- purpose cleaner is not only easy to make, but also, safe, effective, and inexpensive. I have 4 great recipes from which you can pick and choose. Try one or try all to find which one you prefer.
First, start by grabbing yourself a spray bottle. I like to use 16 oz glass spray bottles I buy from Amazon HERE. But you could also recycle glass vinegar bottles or use dollar store plastic spray bottles from my article HERE. (It is not recommended that you use citrus essential oils in plastic bottles however.)
doTERRA onGuard Cleaner concentrate is one of my favorite ways to make an all- purpose cleaner. The guess work is done for you. I especially love this cleaner for cleaning bathrooms. It smells great and gets the job done. Read more about OnGuard Cleaner in my article HERE.
1.5-2 tablespoons cleaner concentrate
16oz of distilled water
In a spray bottle, combine the cleaner concentrate and the distilled water. Shake and you are good to go.
White distilled vinegar is the perfect ingredient to use for green cleaning as I wrote about in my article HERE. It contains natural antifungal and antibacterial properties. Avoid using it on granite, marble, stone and hardwoods though as it can cause damage.
1 1⁄2 cups distilled water
1/2 cup white vinegar
30 drops essential oil
In a glass spray bottle, combine the water and vinegar. Next add the essential oils and shake.
I often use castile soap to clean as it is very versatile. I love it to make homemade soft scrub but it also works great in this all-purpose cleaner as well. This is a favorite for kitchen counters. Spray it on and wipe the surface with a damp cloth as it can leave a soapy residue. Microfiber cloths are a favorite of mine. (When making homemade cleaners, I prefer to use the unscented version of castile soap as the essential oils I add gives it scent and extra cleaning power.) Read more about castile soap and other great uses for it in my article HERE.
16 oz distilled water
2 tablespoons castile soap
15-20 drops essential oil
Fill the bottle with distilled water. Add the castile soap and essential oils and gently shake.
Sometimes, I just want to let the essential oils do their job and make a very simple cleaner. That’s when I choose this two ingredient all- purpose cleaner.
2 cups distilled water
30 drops essential oil
Fill the bottle with distilled water and add essential oils. Shake and spray.
I wrote an in-depth article HERE all about which essential oils are great for cleaning. Read that or give the following a try.
Essential Oil Combination Suggestions:
15 drops each of Lemon and Lavender
15 drops each of Lemon and Melaleuca
30 drops of OnGuard Protective Blend
10 drops each of Lemon, OnGuard, & Purify
10 drops each of Lemon, Melaleuca, & On Guard
- Dark amber or cobalt blue glass spray bottles are recommended because they filter out UV light, which can damage essential oils.
- I only use distilled water when making my sprays because it cuts down on bacteria and contamination. You could also use boiled water but avoid tap water. This article from Crunchy Betty HERE explains why.
I hope you were able to find an all-purpose cleaning recipe that works for you. What green cleaning recipe would you like me to share next?
Until next time,
